There were numerous points across your article resonated with me (as usual!), but this line stood out in particular:

“... data transformations are about so much more than the financial returns they can give organisations. Whilst that is important, I find most organisations incredibly frustrating places to work.”

This is a frustration I’ve had with virtually every enterprise team I’ve worked with or in. But more than the direct frustration of an antiquated, incomplete, or excessively tedious process, what’s been doubly frustrating was how willing to accept the as-is people can be. I guess we all give up at some point.

Excited to see how you’re looking to reverse trends Benny!

Thanks Nick - I think it might be a common frustration that motivates a lot of people in data - the thought that "there is a better way of doing this!!".

You're right that we rapidly accept the status quo - I think that is part of the power of graduate programmes. Every year people arrive with no pre-conceptions about how things should work and, the best graduates, end up naively questioning everything.

100%! Naïveté can be a wonderful tool. One of many ways in which people differ from others but that can be wielded into a competitive advantage 😊

I’m someone from ‘in the business’ now trying to work on the business, so the focus on reducing the frustration level of working in an organisation really makes sense! We’re a government organisation so not trying to make a profit or our fortunes.

The busywork and drudgery of getting data together to manage and report publicly on our work eats up people’s working lives and we need to fix that.

There definitely needs to be a better narrative for data in the non-profit sector than the value one.

Thanks for registering interest in the course!

I celebrate your past successes and new plan! I've seen that statistic about 70% failure rates many times, but it's always referred to as digital transformation efforts. Is it safe to assume that you are referring to the same thing?

Thanks Hugh and you're right I've fallen into the trap of using digital and data almost interchangeably although the stats are always pretty much the same (perhaps others use them interchangeably as well). New Vantage Partner's research would have been a better reference:

▪ Only 30.0% have a well-articulated data strategy for their company

▪ Only 29.2% are experiencing transformation business outcomes

Great article. Love the quote You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.

I look forward to seeing how the curriculum and training develops

Thanks Eddie - James Clear has lots of good quotes but that is my favourite by far. It has been on my whiteboard for a lot of this year.

I'm very excited for the potential to learn about data transformation from you! I can hardly believe the statistics and to imagine how much money and time is spent. Great information here!
