End of BAU: 9 Provocations for Tomorrow's Intrapreneurs
Power structures, not jobs, are under threat from AI
As lots of people became overnight AI experts I decided to take a break from writing to go back to code and develop our AI orchestration engine.
Results of our early experiments have, in the words of those who know me best, left me speechless for the first time in my life.
I’m now convinced that the implications of GenAI on data strategy (the topic I write on) and society are profound and I am ready to spend time writing again on the implications, trends and advice for those leading data and AI transformations.
Given the break, rather than a traditional article I’m starting by sharing some propositions, which may well turn into future articles:
The new possibilities created by AI mean we are entering an unparalleled period of growth and disruption that will produce many more Netflix vs Blockbuster stories than the dot com era. Discuss.
As just one example, AI's impact on development costs will birth a personalised software industry where enterprise applications are tailored to each client and far easier to implement. This threatens both existing software vendors and system integrators. Discuss.
Europe's obsession with risk management over growth will create more Blockbusters than Netflixs as organisations prioritise AI governance over innovation. Discuss.
GenAI has removed any distinction between knowledge management and data management. Maintaining this now artificial distinction will limit the value you get from AI. Discuss.
Approaches to AI governance shine a light on organisational maturity. Startups treat it as everyone's responsibility. Successful enterprises see it as part of AI enablement. Those falling behind treat it as a separate or new role. Discuss.
AI capabilities evolve weekly, while organisations plan in years. Private sector organisations will either embrace AI and agile or go extinct. Public sector organisations must do the same or become a growing tax burden. Discuss.
Today’s large middle management layer exists to oversee silo’ed human processes. AI will break silos and create AI or human-in-the-loop processes that will largely make middle management obsolete. Discuss.
We are discussing universal basic income not because AI threatens all jobs - for example, nursing and construction still face labour shortages. We are discussing it because, for the first time, a technology revolution threatens those in power: media, management, lawyers. Discuss.
AI's ability to provide unlimited McKinsey-grade change management support means it is now as easy to change an organisation as it is to build a new one. Welcome to the golden era of intrapreneurs. Discuss.
At Datent, our experiments with AI have convinced me that the next few years will rewrite the rules of organisational change and we’re busy building the tools for tomorrow’s intrapreneurs.
I'll be sharing more about our journey and learnings here and for a start on any of the above debates, leave a comment and/or join us in next week's webinar on "How AI is Changing Data Strategy". Register here and, as always, we;’ll send the recording even if you miss the session.
